Bringing together human, animal and environmental health

WHO WE ARE

Lincoln Memorial University, a values-based university nestled in the hills of Appalachia, is an incredible community of health and non-health related programs. The Lincoln Memorial University One Health Initiative was founded in 2016 by two veterinary students who saw the incredible opportunity of bringing together the many programs across LMU to improve our campus and the surrounding community. Our goal is to promote multidisciplinary collaboration, spark interest, and educate our community on how they can incorporate One Health into their future careers. We aim to create a fun, educational atmosphere where participants can learn about the concept of One Health in a non-traditional educational environment. We are hopeful that in doing so, participants will be able to truly appreciate the breadth of One Health and how it is applicable to them and their future. Incorporating the One Health mindset on a university level allows for the empowerment of the greater mission with great impact.

WHAT WE DO

Since the development of the Initiative, we have been successful in providing a new platform for students to informally discuss One Health in their own degree programs, find out how they and their clubs pertain to One Health, and discuss how having the One Health mindset can have a wholesome impact on the surrounding community on a university, regional, national, and global level.

We hope to grow the initiative beyond our school to serve the greater Appalachian region in which we are located. It is our mission to continue to foster conversation, community, and understanding of the important connections between humans, animals, and the environment by hosting fun, interactive events with One Health at our core.

WHAT IS ONE HEALTH?

One Health is a collaborative, multi-sectoral, and trans-disciplinary approach, working locally, regionally, nationally, and globally, to achieve optimal health and well-being of all animals, people, plants and their shared environment, recognizing their inextricable interconnections.

One Health is a movement to forge co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations, in both research and applied sciences, between human and animal health arenas, chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agriculturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines, assembled under the One Health umbrella. One Health answers the urgent need for a trans-disciplinary approach towards solving today's critical global health challenges.

BRITTNEY
BEIGEL

Brittney is a third-year veterinary student at Lincoln Memorial University- College of Veterinary Medicine, dually enrolled in the Master of Life Science Research program. Her desires to serve the animal, medical, scientific, and academic communities are driven by her passions for veterinary medicine, public health, and infectious disease research. Upon graduation, Brittney plans to enter into clinical practice and welcome any species that walks through the door!

And what is a veterinary student without their pets? Brittney’s cat- Garf, dog- Penny, and rescue horse- Balthazar, are a constant source of entertainment. When not studying, you can find her hiking the trails through the Cumberland Gap with Penny in tow (or, perhaps the other way around!)
